DIRECTING

I direct new musicals, new plays, rarely produced musicals, and re-envisioned revivals of musicals wherein I uncover a new story while remaining loyal to the original text. I also cultivate opportunities for new musicals through Overtures, a new musicals development reading series that I created and continue to curate.

I frame my work directing revivals as creating aspirational worlds, revising musicals through directorial intervention. I am committed to an anti-racist, feminist, queer, body positive, anti-ablest directing practice that impacts every aspect of the production process, from the casting notice language through to opening night. In directing revivals, without changing any of the codified text, I create dramaturgically sound changes in the imagined worlds of the musical while creating radical inclusivity in the very real world of the rehearsal/performance space.

In my directing, the artists are at the core of the theatre-making and the relationship between actors, writers, designers, choreographers, and director is the foundation on which we build work. I believe in process, valuing time spent in the rehearsal room, in workshops, and in development, as much as I appreciate the ultimate goal of performance. I am committed to creating a playful atmosphere that fosters collaboration, the opportunity for discovery, and the development of new ideas. I believe that what happens in the rehearsal room and on the stage is a labor of love, a playful experiment, a passionate invention, and a joyful exhibition.
